Most of the time, these subscribers voluntarily hand over their e-mail address to the list marketer, and agree to accept marketing messages and promotions, in exchange for something of value. Many times, the list marketer will send the subscriber a free newsletter with useful information, or the list marketer will send the subscriber a free electronic book (or e-book). To get these things, the subscriber usually must agree to accept promotions from the list marketer, on top of what ever perks they will get.

Isn't That SPAM?
Most of the time, no. SPAM is what is called unsolicited e-mail. That means that SPAM is sent to people who have not subscribed to a list. Many people who send SPAM will get e-mail addresses in illegal ways and send promotions to e-mail addresses without permission. This is very bad, since it annoys people and sometimes gives list marketing a bad name. But, in reality, SPAM and list marketing are nowhere near the same, since most list marketers ask their subscribers to agree to accept promotions. When a subscribers gives their permission to send e-mail promotions, this is not SPAM at all.
