Although Pure Hoodia has been said to be one of the top weight loss supplements of the century, it has actually been around for thousands of years. The Hoodia Gordonii cactus is found in the desert regions of South Africa and the bushmen that have lived in that area eat this cactus in order to stave off hunger whenever they went on extended hunting trips. This gave them the strength to be able to travel the long distances that were necessary without having to worry about being hungry or thirsty. Once the media learned this, they featured it on several different television programs which included 60 minutes. Oprah also had an article or so about this in her personal magazine. This was enough to launch Pure Hoodia into the diet industry as the magic pill that we were all looking for.

It is said that Pure Hoodia does not have any negative side effects on the body at all. Leslie Stahl, who reported on this product in 60 minutes actually went out to the desert region and tested the product for herself. According to her, she did not have any aftertaste and it did not cause any irregular heartbeat. She also stated that she did not have a problem with hunger throughout that entire day, even when she would have normally have been hungry.

This is also the case for the bushmen that have been taking the product for thousands of years as they never complained of side effects. Is this telling us that the plant is safe for us to take as well? the fact of the matter is, it does appear to be safe. If you think about it, these bushmen were using the plant for thousands of years in order to suppress their hunger on hunting trips. During the time that it has been popular with humans, there have been no published reports about it containing any negative side effects. Of course, time will tell if there are any side effects to worry about but as of right now, none have been recognized.

Phizer, a drug company decided to give up extracting some of the products from the Hoodia plant because they claimed that it did cause some damage to the liver, this has never been proven and it may just as easily be the case that as they cannot patent a plant they have no way or cornering the market for themselves. Nobody is aware of exactly how natural products such as Pure Hoodia will interact with any of the medications that somebody may be taking which are prescribed by their doctor. After all, bushman in South Africa did not have high blood pressure, depression or cholesterol medications that they were taking. Of course, they also do not have a problem with their weight so many of these problems were not really an issue at all.

There are no scientific or clinical tests which have been performed by the FDA which shows that the Hoodia Gordonii plant is safe. Of course, there have been some independent lab tests that show that it is effective in helping people to curb their appetite and lose weight. Products that are found in nature are not put through the same rigorous testing as are many pharmaceutical products that are known to have negative side effects, regardless of what they are.

It is thought by some clinicians that the Hoodia Gordonii extract may cause some problems in the livers of those who also have diabetes. The Hoodia Gordonii plant does trick the brain in order to make it feel as if the body is full whenever it is not. If a diabetic patient is taking Hoodia, they would want to make sure that they are eating the proper foods on a regular basis, whether they are hungry or not. This will help to keep their insulin levels stable. Of course, the weight loss that they experience would also help with their diabetes, they should just make sure that they eat the proper foods, and of course consult their doctor first.

It is always a good idea to run the possibility of taking one of these products by your doctor, especially if you are having serious medical problems. If you have liver problems, you should make sure that you talk to your doctor to see if they recommend that you take Pure Hoodia at all.
