Greece is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world and its easy to see why with its modern resorts and wonderful heritage. Athens is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and is considered the cultural capital of the Mediterranean boasting many fine examples of art, philosophy and much more. The Acropolis was rebuilt in 2002 for the Olympics and is a must-see excursion when you visit, since you are free to walk around it now.

By unifying all the antiquities with parks and pedestrian streets and avenues and tying them in with the nightlife areas of the Plaka, Psiri and Thission they have created a model that other cities are sure to follow. With the new highways that divert traffic from the downtown they have not only made the city streets safer and the air cleaner but they have made it easier to get in and out of town by car, bus or taxi.

Crete and corfu are also popular destinations but there are so many greek islands (about 1400!) that there is plenty of variety for anyone that has been before. Some are quiet and secluded where as others are much more vibrant. The different resorts are great for families, groups, couples and some are well suited to more aged people, but this can quickly change within a few miles of where you stay. Rhodes, Kefalonia and Kos are great family holidays but also offer a thumping nightlife whereas Santorini is much more romantic and gives you the chance to see one of the most picturesque sunsets in the world.

Most resorts have some element of boating or watersports on offer and what could be better than skiing in the blue waters off the amazing beaches. Laze by the pool, or search for secret coves that can only be reached by motor boat. With sparkling waters, and beachside tavernas awaiting, you wont want to leave.

Winter can be wet and cool, so tourism is quite low key. For this reason, many resorts often close down around this time of year and reopen when the busier periods start. Although the middle of the year offers some quite intense heat, if you like it a touch milder then April, May, September and October are usually warm and you can pick up some great bargains on 5 start accomodation. (You may want to check the status of the various resorts before booking though).
