Repairing Broken Slats

Vertical blinds are one of the two generic types of window blinds. They are made of wooden, metal or cloth slats that are suspended and hung on one end by independent gears. These gears are lined side by side to allow them to move each other altogether to open or close.

Window blinds in general are used to cover windows and doors. It was originally designed to cover windows. However, its function has evolved to covering doorways as well.
Window blinds help enhance the interior aesthetics of your home.

There are two basic parts of window blinds. One is the louvers. They can be made of fabric, metal or wood. Then there is a horizontal head rail that would be placed on top of the window. Then there is the chain or the mechanism that would pull the slats to an open or close or all side to one side.

Like anything that we have, window blinds also can break. Vertical blinds can stop opening or closing. Slats may need to be replaced.

One of the most common repairs that would need to be done on vertical blinds and on window blinds in general would be to repair the clips that hold the slats. Often times there would be more than one clip to be repaired. There is also a possibility that the tiny weight at the end of the slats has come off. And what makes things worse is that the slats may have stopped moving at all. There could be damage in that head rail.
But don't worry. Usually, all it would take is to replace these parts with new ones.

The easiest to repair is a broken slat. All you would need to do is to take out the broken slat. To do this, you would need to move the slat slightly upward. Turn it a little bit so that it would come off the holder. Then, gently pull on it. If there would be a clip that attaches the slat to a string, then take that out first. Then take the string that opens and closes them out from all the slats.
You can then take the brand-new replacement and slide it in the clip. Make sure that you place the slat in the same way as the others. It could sometimes happen that you will experience some difficulty in sliding the slat in. What you can do is you can use a screwdriver to add some pressure. But be careful when putting pressure onto your slat. Too much pressure might break your clip. When you're done replacing slats, you can then sew the chain or the string back onto the slats.

If you are working with vertical blinds with slats made of cloth, you can actually just sew the torn part with a needle and some thread. Just check where the tear is. If it would be near the hole where the slat attaches to the clip, then the slat will eventually fall. To remedy this, you may tear a piece of the cloth from the end of the slat and glue it on the torn area. Don't cover up the hole. Make sure that they are glued together firmly. Then put it back to where it used to be.

Window blinds are such helpful pieces to have at home. Vertical blinds would be a good choice since it would be able to almost completely shut the light out. But all that will depend on your taste.
