The phrase solar pv is a little redundant if etymology of the word is considered. The word "pv" refers to the word photovoltaic. The word photovoltaic actually stems from the Greek word "phos" which means light and the word "voltaic" which is derived from the word volt, a unit for measuring electromotive force. As the natural light is only sourced from the sun, the word photovoltaic can already mean electricity from solar energy.

A photovoltaic material consists of arrays of photovoltaic cells. These cells convert the radiation coming from the sun into direct electricity that can be used in both grid and off-grid electricity production. A single cell can generate an energy that is enough to power a telephone. In cases where the power generation of single cell is not enough, the cells are electrically connected into an array to be able to produce the amount of energy demanded.

Originally, the first photovoltaic cells are used to power the orbiting space satellites and other space crafts. Today, photovoltaic technology can be experienced in regular homes using the solar pv. These solar pv's are made in sheets, with at least one layer, to up to multiple layers.

The solar pv's are most usually placed in house roofs. The roof is the best location for the solar pv because it is safe from being damaged by other human activities. More importantly, it can receive direct sunlight and with the highest amount of sunshine possible in that location. Solar pv's convert the sunshine into direct electrical energy that can be used directly to power homes. When the sunlight comes in contact with the solar pv surface, electrical field is immediately created and electricity is produced. Now, the more sunlight the solar sheet gets, the more electricity is generated.

The solar pv's come in different colors, sizes and shapes. They can also come in different materials but the most commonly used for home electricity generating purposes is the silicon. Kilowatt peak or kWp is the standard measurement for the energy produced by solar pv's.

There is a major benefit in using solar pv's. This technology helps cuts the carbon footprint. It is so obvious that this can have very positive effects in the environment because in helps reducing the amount of greenhouse gasses on earth. Aside from that, home-owners can also experience reduction in their electricity bills. The use of solar pv's is a great way to cut on costs and save the environment. Currently, the countries most active in furthering the use of solar pv's include Japan, the United States, Germany and France.
