With a UV-blocking skylight, light can pass through, with a great red reduction in UV. There are also special coatings called low-emisivity coatings that can reduce the amount of radiant energy so you have some control over how warm is too warm. With an opening mechanism, you can use controls from the floor that can open the skylight and allow ventilation. Just remember to install a screen to keep the bugs away whenever you open the skylight.

High end skylights also have a mechanism that allows you to adjust the settings from transparent to opaque. An alternative would be using skylight blinds. Keep in mind that when it comes to skylights, bigger doesn't necessarily mean better, since they can light up rooms 20 times their size. There have also been 'leaking' issues some time ago but sometimes, this leaking happens when vapor forms into water droplets during the colder seasons and eventually trickling down to the floor. There are some that are constructed from materials that reduce the chance of condensation, as well as those with water droplet collection channels.

In addition to its features, you also need to think about the type of skylight you'd want for your house. You might want one made of tempered glass for safety.
