While going to the theaters still remains the main way to watch a movie, watching current movies on DVD into the player has become the preferred second choice. While you may not get the immersive theater experience, with the right home theater setup, you can get the next best thing. Plus you can avoid all the other annoying things that you encounter at theaters these days, such as people who talk on cellphones during the movie. And there are always new DVD movie releases every week. Here is a list of some of the current movies on DVD.

Date Night is one of the most anticipated new DVD movie releases, since it was a hit when it was released. The screwball comedy starred Tina Fey and Steve Carrell, and got generally positive reviews from critics. DVD movie reviews similarly praised the film, as well as the audio and video quality of its digital presentation and its extras, including a short feature showcasing alternate jokes for specific scenes, a gag reel and three fake public service announcements supporting a "National Date Night" as well as trailers for movies coming soon on DVD such as Predators and Knight and Day.

Death at a Funeral is a remake of a British film that was released in 2007, but featuring a predominantly African-American cast including Chris Rock, Danny Glover, Martin Lawrence, Zoe Saldana and Tracey Morgan. Reviews of the film on its first release were mixed; DVD movie reviews were similarly lukewarm to the movie, although views on the disk itself were another matter. Critics praised the sharp transfer, although they found the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack oddly heavier on the front speakers. They also liked the audio commentary, a dialogue between Chris Rock and director Neil LaBute, for being lively and informative. Trailers for movies coming soon on DVD featured on the disk include The 2010 Karate Kid, Grown Ups and the Back-Up Plan.

While Kick Ass disappointed at the box office, it became one of the hottest new DVD movie releases as it debuted at number one in DVD and Blu-Ray sales charts. This was not surprising to many industry observers given that the film garnered mostly positive reviews when it was released in cinemas. And DVD movie reviews followed suit, praising the film although being less laudatory about the extras. However, a better set of extras are available on a Blu-Ray+DVD Combo Pack.

Those who like foreign films and art-house films can take their pick as The Ghost Writer and A Prophet are among the current movies on DVD. The Ghost Writer is a thriller directed by Roman Polanski which he completed while under house arrest in Switzerland while awaiting possible extradition to the US, while A Prophet, about a young petty criminal sent to prison was a nominee for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2010 Academy Awards. Other foreign language and art house movies coming soon on DVD include L'Origine as well as American indies the Loss of a Teardrop Diamond and Solitary Man.
