These days, a star is no guarantee that a movie will be a hit. In fact, many movies built around stars have failed to find an audience. One reason for this could be that these days, people care more about the concept of a film itself than they do about who is starring in it. Another is that many of these movies are simply not very good, and even the presence of a star or two could not "open" them. Here are some star-driven current movies on DVD or movies coming soon on DVD if you would like to check out your favorite star's latest effort for the considerably cheaper price of a rental.

Brooklyn's Finest is a crime film with Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke and Wesley Snipes. It was independently produced for a budget of $17 million with many of the actors taking pay cuts to help get the film made. Despite receiving middling reviews, the film went on to do fairly well at the box office, commensurate with its budget. However, the film was one of the most awaited movies coming soon on DVD as it reached the top of many US video sales and rental charts when it was released in July, and remains one of the most popular new DVD movie releases.

The Bounty Hunter is a romantic comedy that starred Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler. The film received mostly negative reviews from critics, but it still did fairly well at the box office with a $67 million US gross. DVD movie reviews were not much kinder to the film, particularly its sparse extras, which included a making of and features on being a bounty hunter. However, it has been one of the more popular new DVD movie releases, where it has generated $18 million in DVD sales.

Cop Out is a buddy-cop comedy starring Bruce Willis and Tracey Morgan that is most notable for being the first film directed, but not written, by Kevin Smith. The movie was not a big success, earning less than $45 million in its theatrical run, but is still one of the more-watched current movies on DVD, generating $9.5 million in sales since its July 20 release. DVD movie reviews were just as scathing as their print counterparts about the film, as well as its sparse extras, including extended scenes and outtakes, as well as features such as Wisdom from the S*** Bandit.

Greenberg is a dark comedy starring Ben Stiller and was one of the most anticipated movies coming soon on DVD for Stiller fans who wanted to see him handle more substantial material. While it was not one of the most popular new DVD movie releases when it came out on July 13, it still became one of the more sought-out current movies on DVD. DVD movie reviews were mostly positive about the film, which they felt was an effective character study from writer-director Noah Baumbach, and the features, which included a making-of and featurettes on director Baumbach's novelistic approach to filmmaking and how the film portrays the city of Los Angeles.
