Expect to See Current Movies on DVD Sooner than you Think

An increasing number of people would rather see current movies on DVD at home on their big screen TVs rather than on a Multiplex screen. This has resulted in reducing the time between a movie's debut in theaters and its release on DVD to around four months, on the average. Recently, however, studios responding to perceived changes in moviegoers' habits, have tried to push that window even further, reducing it to as little as three months. Here are some of the blockbuster summer movies coming soon on DVD to look out for in the remaining months of 2010.

Iron Man 2 (released May 7) opened the summer season of 2010, and became one of the summer's biggest hits with a domestic gross of $312 million. It is set to join the ranks of new DVD movie releases on Sept. 28 in a two-disk DVD or three-disk Blu-Ray + DVD package. While both sets contain duplicate special features such as the audio commentary by director Jon Favreau and a selection of deleted scenes, DVD movie reviews will surely go nuts over the broader range of bonuses on the combo package, which include features on the origins of War Machine, Black Widow and Nick Fury and the making of the movie.

Toy Story 3 (released August 22) was the most popular entry in the series, earning over $400 million in the US and is surely one of the most anticipated movies coming soon on DVD. Disney is set to debut the film on November 2 as one of its new DVD movie releases in a standard DVD edition, 2-disk Blu-Ray and three-disk DVD/Blu-Ray/digital copy package. Among the most anticipated features include a special teaser for Cars 2, Pixar's first non-Toy Story sequel, which will surely be much-discussed in DVD movie reviews, the Day and Night theatrical short, making-of short features as well as commercials for Lotso bear and dating tips from Ken. The first two movies in the series were also re-released on March in 2-disk DVD/Blu-Ray combo packs and remain among the most popular current movies on DVD.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is surely one of the most anticipated movies coming soon on DVD. The third film in the series was the most successful in the franchise, earning nearly $300 at the US box office, as well as receiving some of the best reviews in the entire franchise. The first two films remain among the most popular current movies on DVD, with Twilight being the top-selling DVD of 2009 with over 10 million units sold and more than $186 million in sales. While most DVD movie reviews have not been kind to the movies, the disks themselves are another matter: critics have singled out the actors/director audio commentary on the first Twilight film for particular praise, since they were able to show an amount of self-awareness and playful humor about themselves and the film which they probably won't be allowed to display again. Given the release pattern of past Twilight films as well as the pattern set by new DVD movie releases in general, expect to see an early November release date for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.
