Each type of renewable energy source also has its downside – wind farms typically generate less electricity and a much larger space is needed by a wind farm if it is to replace a fossil fueled plant; same goes for solar panels; geothermal and hydropower are possible only for some areas; biomass would have to be built far from residential areas.

Solar energy is one renewable energy source whose output has been increasing for the past few years. Solar panels or photovoltaic (PV) panels are a collection solar or PV cells connected and packaged together. The cells that are usually made of silicon convert the sun's light into direct current; an inverter is used to convert the electricity into the alternating current supplied in our power outlets. They are becoming more efficient, generating more power per area, and development is being continued.

The good thing about solar panels is that, unlike other renewable energy sources, you can easily install one in your own roof, garage, or garden. PV tiles has also been invented to be fitted onto roofs to replace ordinary tiles, making an entire roof a solar station soaking up the sun's energy. Although the purchase of PV tiles and its installation will undoubtedly have costs, savings of up to 75% to 100% are expected, allowing the solar to pay for itself through the years. The contribution to halting climate change though, can be priceless.

Installing a panel or two, to generate a small amount of electricity for lighting your garden or for boiling water, should be easy and you may probably be able to do it on your own if you know how to tinker with gadgets and electricity. Replacing your roof with PV tiles is another matter and best left to experts and professional installers. With solar panels becoming more and more widespread, it's becoming more available in hobby shops and home improvement stores. You may visit one today and ask for help in the solar panel for your home so you can start cutting electricity bills and help save the environment at the same time.
