1. Do not use shorts with a gel pad contained in plastic. Though the pad may be nice, the plastic can't transport moisture, trapping it in your crotch and leads to skin irritation.

2. Instead of buying specialized handlebar padding, make one yourself. Buy some thin felt and wrap it around your bike's handlebars and you're good to go.

3. After washing your bike, dry it with a leaf blower to help get water out of corners and places where water does not get out naturally.

4. To fend off dogs you can: bring a whistle and give the dog a loud shrill, or you can bring a small dirty rag and just drop it off the ground when the dog starts chasing you. The dog will often stop to smell the rag, giving you the time to get away.

5. To stop your hydration pack from freezing shut in water, make sure the water goes right back in the reservoir. If it gets stuck in the tube it will freeze your hydration pack shut. Blow into the tube or hold the tube straight up and squeeze on the nozzle until all the water has gone back into the reservoir.

6. To learn how to ride with no hands, you can start training on a heavy bike since lighter bikes tend to wiggle much and are much harder to stabilize because they are so light. Heavier bikes are more stable because they don't move as much. Once you've learned the trick, riding no hands on a lighter bike will be easy.

7. When riding in to an intersection, always make sure to make eye contact with the opposing driver who might cross your lane. Making eye contact ensures drivers don't cut in front of you.

8. When adjusting brakes, put nickels in between the pads and the rims. This will set the pads at a perfect distance to the rims.

9. Always start a ride with a sip of water. This ensures you are adequately hydrated before beginning your journey.

10. Applying a light layer of Vaseline on your face during winter helps protect it from the cold.

11. To prevent cramps, add salt to your drinking water.

Aside from knowing some of these road bike tips, you should also take care to know some of these common cycling etiquette.

1. Never make sudden or unannounced speed changes. This will prevent other bikers behind you from crashing into you.

2. When bikers ahead of you are stopping, give a hand signal to bikers behind you.

3. Warn other bikers when you encounter potholes and other objects on the road.

4. When you get a flat tire and you're right in the thick of the pack, yell out "flat!" and maintain your line until everyone has passed you.
