Space-saving Gardening Layout

In many rural areas, the traditional methods of vegetable gardening using garden plots are still popular. But most of the gardeners nowadays require a gardening layout that is low maintenance and use up less space. Here are a few suggestions that may prove to be helpful.

1. Raised Beds

Utilizing raised beds that are no more than 3 to 4 feet wide is a great space-saving layout that also provides easy access to the plants. You can make as many raised beds as you want, you can even make pathways in between them so you can access all sides of the beds. These pathways may be covered in mulch or gravel; they not only improve their appearance this also helps keep the weeds from growing.

When designing raised beds, you should place the taller vegetables at the back for 3-sided beds or in the center for beds that you have all-around access to, and gradually work yourself down in size. You can also eliminate the need for planting stakes by growing certain types of vegetables together, you can let your beans to grown up and around cornstalks to save on space. You could also add trellises for vines or climbing vegetables and plant other kind below them.

2. Hillside Gardens

There is no law stating all vegetable gardens need to be flat. You can also use a vegetable garden layout along hillsides using raised beds and/or terraces. The garden's irrigation and design will of course be influenced on how much of a slope there is. For best results, design the beds in such a way that the vegetables can be planted across the slope instead of along it. And if possible, locate your garden on a slope that is facing either south or southeast.

3. Containers and Vertical Gardens

You need not have an spacious backyard to grow your own vegetables. Nearly all vegetables these days can easily be grown in containers as in normal backyard gardens, which is why container gardening is one of the easiest gardening layout you can use. You have a huge array of containers to choose from, ranging from different shapes and sizes. These containers can be moved around as needed; you can place them on shelves, or even hang them in baskets anywhere in your property.

Growing vegetables in containers is the best plan of action if you want to grow your own food but live I urban areas where space is a bit tight. With containers, they can save space and enjoy a bountiful harvest of vegetables at the same time. Just keep in mind that since the soil in containers has less water content than in regular garden plots, you will therefore need to water your plants more frequently.

Don't just limit yourself to making your vegetable garden look like those traditional ones you see on TV. You can grow your own vegetables wherever you live, be it a house with a small yard, or even in an apartment building.
