It was expensive back then to produce these gadgets and in order to reach more consumers, the industry experimented in producing cheaper film formats, which led to the production of 8mm films in the early 30's. It was also during this decade that color films were introduced to consumers, and in the following years, both 8mm and 16mm films were used to record home videos. Home movie shooting continued to be popular with the introduction of Super 8, a film that was much easier to use and also inexpensive. When television technology came, videotapes became the most affordable medium to record on. The VHS and Betamax became its competing formats in the 70's. VHS formats eventually took over and made shooting home videos easier.

When people became more familiar with making home movies, the industry set forth another revolution in digital format. The switch from tape to digital disks was fairly easy since a lot of people are already using camcorders or have seen videos made by other people. Today, thousands of moments can be captured on digital video. There is never a well-documented activity by this generation that is not preserved in detail through these videos. Many can now shoot their own movies at home and capture even the most spontaneous moments of everyday life with modern camcorders.
