There are two types of backpack travellers. The first is someone who carries around a giant backpack, which makes him look like he's giving a piggyback ride to his entire house, and the second is someone who seems like he's just carrying a regular backpack around. Of course if you have to pick one, you'll definitely choose the lighter load; it's easier to move around in and you won't stand out too much in a crowd. But even though you'll be carrying a smaller backpack it doesn't mean that you won't be ready for adventure.

The main difference between backpacking with all your belongings slung over your shoulders and lightweight backpacking hiking isn't about what items you have to leave behind, but more on the quality of equipment you'll be taking with you. For example, you can lug around a large inflatable bed and a heavy air pump around, or if you think smart and invest a couple more bucks and get a Lite Cot; a bed that when not in use is roughly about the size of a loaf of bread, perfect for light backpacking hiking.

Now about what gadgets you need to bring, of course you'll need a cell phone just in case you need to contact someone. If possible, have a phone that has other kinds of gadgets built-in its functions, like a digital compass, a GPS, a torchlight, etc. With this you'll be saving a lot more backpack space that can be used for other things items.

Now, when you're backpacking of course you'll also be camping out, so you'll need a good tent to give you shelter. Since you'll be spending a good part of the day hiking, you won't need a huge tent. To save on backpack space and overall weight you should just buy a tunnel tent, this is a tube-shaped tent that doesn't have much room inside except for a sleeping bag. This type of tent does not take up so much room in your backpack when it's not in use so it's perfect.

Now finally onto your food and water rations, dried fruits and meat jerky are the staple food for backpacking hiking, they're light and provide you with the energy you'll need for the trip. It's a good idea to also bring a couple of protein energy bars, just in case. As for water, since you'll be travelling light, you'll find yourself drinking less water than when you're travelling with a large backpack so a small water bottle will be enough. But to be sure, bring along some water purifying tablets so you can make potable water from rivers or streams.

With all these tips, you will be able to limit the weight you'll be carrying around when you're hiking. Not only is your load a whole lot lighter, you'll also find that you're not lacking anything when it comes to equipment and supplies.
