New Formula One Rules

Many formula one rules have been made clear in the recent convention of the World Motor Sport Council in Geneva this 2010. Discussed below are some of the policies that will be implemented in the current and future seasons.

In terms of tires, the FIA Formula One World Championship would only have one tire maker , and that is Pirelli. The supplier has a contract with F1 council for three years, from 2009 to 2011. Having one tire source was prioritized in order for the council to ensure that all sporting and technical regulations would be properly implemented.

Formula one rules in terms of safety cars have also been changed. From now on, no race car driver is allowed to overtake unless he has already zoomed past the first safety car line for the first time. In races where the safety car is still present in the beginning of or during the last lap, race drivers should be aware that the safety car will enter the pit lane at the end of the lap and they will in turn take the finish line normally without overtaking.

regulations on the general safety of drivers have also been made clear. Beginning this year, racing cars that show slow pacing, erratic movement, and other potentially risky actions will have to be reported immediately to the stewards. For the Formula 1 council to ensure that cars do not take unnecessarily slow pacing during laps where the pit exit is opened, drivers should follow the maximum time set by the race director of each racing event. The maximum time is mandated to be identified by the director prior to the first day of racing practice.

Some rules on car mechanisms have also been changed. Starting next year, drivers are already allowed to activate their adjustable body work prior to the start or during the race. Before doing so however control electronics will initially have to tell the driver that bodywork is indeed enabled and therefore can manually get activated.

There were also modifications on rules regarding aerodynamics, weight, and fuel draining of the race cars. For one, starting 2011, race drivers are not anymore allowed to use any system, procedure, or device to change the aerodynamic characteristics of the car. The car's maximum weight too is set at 640 kilograms throughout the event. In case of fuel draining, drivers are allowed to have their cars fueled only if they drive back to the pits under their own power.

The Formula 1 FIA World Rally Championship calendar remains the same as approved by the World Council earlier this 2010. The calendar states the inclusion of 13 events to establish the evolution of rallying globally and in consonance to the formats of the races and the eligibility of cars.

In ratifying new formula one rules, the council asserted the need of racing drivers to promote road safety at all times. All participants of the event are mandated to act as ambassadors of motor sport, and therefore should exhibit exemplary road conduct.
