Bathrooms serve as one of the most significant parts of every household. In America and other western countries, the room is commonly defined as a "Lavatory Room". In European and some eastern countries, the room is referred to as "The Water Closet" or simply "Toilet". Some American territories are using the term "Restroom" or "Public Toilet" during formal purposes.

The early existence of bathrooms is traced back during the early 3000 B.C when the first series of records for bath hygiene method was introduced. During the early 3000 B.C, the water used by premature inhabitants around the world is said to create a strong impact in imparting values and religion. During that time, the water used for taking a bath is said to be seen as a predominant form of body purification . People during that time were not necessarily required to cleanse themselves before entering a church or other consecrated areas. The "Age of Cleanliness" was introduced during the initial years of the Third Millennium Century. During the Age of Cleanliness period, sewers and public toilets were already invented by professionals around the world. Most of the types of toilets that exist until now were invented during the "Mohenjo-Daro Circa" in 2800 B.C. The toilets that were invented were enthused from westernized designs. The "Western-made" toilets were said to be made from authentic bricks and wooden seat materials.

In 1944, An India-based archaeology director named Sir Mortimer Wheeler wrote in his article that the westernized bathrooms designed for worldwide use are made from high quality sanitary arrangements. The earliest traditional bathrooms were made from the Knossos Palace in Crete during the early 17th century. An advanced study on the prehistoric scheming of westernized toilets were said to be made from the rural town of Akrotiri which is located on Aegean seas. The toilets from Akrotiri were made from "Alabaster Tubs" which are commonly used for stylish bathing systems in the Aegean island during the 15th century. In the 16th - 18th century, the uses of public toilets were disregarded from several western and eastern countries. In Asian countries such as Japan, the traditional bathing is regularly done in "Onsen (Spas)" and "Sento (private toilet)". The use of bathing places for private purposes were introduced and favored at the start of the 20th century.

Bathrooms in the US today are basically classified as a typical "Master Toilet". Many bathing rooms in the US feature a bath tub and shower which adjoins with striking resemblance to a master bedroom. There are three basic types of westernized bathrooms which can be found in many American and European households today. The three types are composed of the following:
- The "Powder Room" or "Half Room" contains a single sink and toilet only.
- The "Full Room" or "Full Bath" contains toilet, sink, shower and bathtub.
- The "3/4 Room" contains sink, toilet and shower.
