Lighting

Lighting is an essential aspect of a reef aquarium. Unlike a fish only tank that has no other living organism, a reef tanks also have corals and algae. These organisms find it necessary to get adequate lighting. Light helps the algae or zooxanthellae to starts photosynthesis. Unlike animals who feed on other plants and other animal, creatures like the algae produces food on its own through this process. Corals also benefit from this process because simple sugars are also created during photosynthesis. Indeed, by simply providing adequate lighting, the natural order of the food chain is maintained.

Water movement

Corals are mostly benefited from this component. Because corals are unable to provide food on their own through photosynthesis, water flow allows food particles and nutrients to also be distributed among the corals. Through water movement, gas exchange is also occurs. Water movement can be produced by using gyre tanks or water pumps.

Water chemistry

Just like water movement, corals are also the main focus where water chemistry is involved; most prominently, stony corals which are require additional care because of its sensitivity to the water chemistry. The amount of calcium, carbon and pH level is carefully monitored to ensure that the corals are exposed to good condition. Again this component means very little to fish only tanks and FOWLR tanks since they do not have live corals in it.

Temperature

The temperature of reef tanks are usually around 75-82 �F . Abrupt change in temperature will not be good for both fish and other sea life. Using heaters and chillers are the best way to regulate the temperature. Unlike heaters, buying chillers can be more expensive. A home air conditioner or a fan can be used as an alternative,
