Is a custom kitchen island a good idea?

In case you don't know, a custom kitchen island is like a free standing table that is somewhere toward the middle of the kitchen. They are often beautiful to look at and very functional. They add more workspace to a kitchen. They are often used for rolling dough, baking, chopping and things of that nature. Some will even have a small sink, but that's pretty rare.

If you are thinking about adding one here are a few points to keep in mind. If you are thinking about going DIY (do it yourself), you will need about 2 days to finish the project. In addition, the cost will range from $500 to $1,000. Also, the degree of difficulty for this project is rated as "hard." My conclusion is that unless you are a seasoned handy person you are probably better off buying one readymade and having it put in for you.

All three are top brands that are well made and beautiful to look at. Some makers offer portable islands. I'm not a fan of these because they are not as stable as build in units.

Be sure that you select one that is easy to clean. Also, pay attention to the height. You want your island to be the same height as your counter tops. If the island is not the same height as the counter tops the kitchen will look odd. The island will not seem to be an extension of the counters, which is what you want. Please don't forget to think about storage. Don't get an island without any storage; that does not make sense. Almost all of them come with storage so you need only figure out what kind and how much you would like. Some people feel that the storage benefit of an island is as valuable as the counter top space.

Be sure and factor in lighting. For your island you are going to want task lighting. Task lighting is focused bright light that helps the cook see well enough to do detailed work. For an island this kind of light will hang from the ceiling and is called pendant lighting. The last thing to think about if you are going to put in an island is electricity. Be sure that you have enough electrical outlets near the island so that you can run appliances and cooking tools as you would like.

In my opinion, a custom kitchen island is a great idea. They are pleasing to look at, make it easier to work in the kitchen and add value to the house. While they can be expensive they don't have to be. At the end of the day, what cook would not like some additional usable space for cooking?
