First, make a list of the talents you have that you can utilize to benefit you in starting as well as operating a business from home. Are you a creative person? Are you good at designing things? What other talents do you have? Use your answers to these questions as your basis for planning and writing a home based business proposal.

Second, assess and determine the skills you possess. A skill is different from a talent. Talent is something you are born with, while a skill is something you worked hard on to learn, like Internet marketing skills, for instance. You are not born with online marketing skills ingrained within you. You have to start from scratch, learn marketing in general, and apply the principles to an online setting to be able to learn the skills of a marketing expert. So identify the skills you currently have and include them as determining factors in operating your business.

Third, put all your skills and talents together and use them to brainstorm for business ideas. Ask yourself the question: "With these learned skills and God-given talents that I have, what type of home based business should I start that will be the most suited to such talents and skills?" Let us say for instance that you are a gifted writer and you have good writing skills. Examples of the business ideas you could come up with may include providing online article content for websites, freelance blogging or you could set up a writing webinar which is the online version of a writing workshop.

Fourth, re-assess all the business ideas you generated to see if they really pass as home based businesses. A proposal may look home based during its inception but as the details come in, it's actually the other way around. So recheck all the ideas you came up with and cross out the ones that don't look home based.

And last but not the least, figure out all the profit angles concerning your business idea. Is there a demand, a market for the products or services you are planning to offer? If such demand exists, does it apply to your area or locality? Would the income you make from the business be enough considering the costs, efforts and resources invested into it? You need to find answers to these queries before you signal your home based business to go live.
