Lampang is situated near the Wang River, which is an ancient trading route from China. There are several national parks within the province and they are Tham Pha Thai, Chae Son and Doi Khun Than.

Huay Tek botanical flower gardens in Lampang feature an abundance of flower species that have been planted in 10x10m square plots. These Lampang flowers are grown for sale, and frequently go to the flower trading markets of Bangkok. Flowers are raised here due to the temperate climate of Lampang.

Lampang began its existence within the late 1600's and was originally inhabited by the Mon tribe, which would not consider theirselves to be Thai (or Tai) simply because they came from the great Khmer empire. It had been under Burmese rule for many years until eventually the province allied with Siam the great state that at some point became recognized as Thailand.

There are lots of things to discover and do in Lampang. Enjoy the flower gardens at Huay Tek, take a winding river ride down the Wang, explore the fascinating and ancient structures of the Chao Pho Shrine or visit the Elephant Conservation Center.

Lampang is well known for its ceramic and terra-cotta. Local people produce fine plates and gourds and religious trinkets made from terra-cotta. Lampang is an excellent spot to visit during Loy-Kratong when candle lit flower boats are sailed in the Wang river and stunning sky lanterns can be seen flying into the sky. Lampang can easily be reached by long distance bus service from Bangkok. Alternatively, take a flight to Chiang Mai and have a coach service from there.

At the same time, another location of interest with regards to flowers is Lampun, which is close to Chiang Mai and Lampang in Northern Thailand. Lampun is on the Ping river that is an early trading path for the flowers into Chiang Mai and further south into the country. Lampun is a scenic area with huge flower laden sprawling valleys that are technically the foothills towards the Himalayas given that they have exactly the same tectonic plate. Lampun is only 15 miles away from Chiang Mai.

In the late 1100's this part of the Mon kingdom fell to the Lannas until eventually it had been ruled by the Burmese for two centuries. Thailand was finally formed by a collaboration of many provincial leaders and the Burmese were eventually removed from Thailand altogether.
