In Asian philosophy, the idea of yin and yang is generally used to describe how vastly different ideas are connected and dependent of one another in the real world. This idea has strong roots in ancient Chinese philosophy and knowledge and is also the basis of their traditional medicine. Yin yang is also a large factor in the practice of most martial arts and lifestyles. In the western society, the concept's symbol is utilized to convey the idea of good versus bad and white versus black.

Fans of this concept believe that all things have both a yin and yang position. Every concept has an opposite and neither one of them needs to be looked at as particularly mean or evil. Rather, it is more about keeping a balance and relationship. In fact, it was the western society that began the idea of attributing the philosophy with innocence and evil.

Generally, the yin and yang symbol is a circle that tends to consist of two parts of equal white and black. In each of the divided sections is a littler circle of the contrasting color. Though this is the most recognizable one, there are a number of other symbols.

The contrasting elements, often times, of the yin and the yang are described as beams of sunlight that shine over valleys and mountains. As it moves gradually to one side to the other, the sunlight, aka yang and yin with one another, change places.

The light, or yin, is characterized generally as yielding, tranquil, and soft. Yin is often associated with femininity, night time, and the moon. However, it should be specified that yin is not labeled in Chinese philosophy as more true or innocent than its counterpart yang. Due to incorrect translations and common misconceptions, the western society have repeatedly attributed these things.

Yang, on the other hand is described as intensely focused, hot, solid, and aggressive. This side of the symbol is associated with fire, the sun, masculinity, and daytime. Each characteristic and description of the elements can not completely exist in nature without the other. Again, it should never exclusively be designated purely evil or bad.

There are several types of Chinese martial arts that adopted yin and yang as fundamental principles. In them, the nature of the philosophy is applied to promoting and defending the human body. The archetypal yin yang symbol is usually used in the art's logo or design as well.
