I Ching is an ancient Chinese text that is in fact one of the oldest known existing texts. Many people will know it as the book of changes and may have used it for divination or will have heard about its use. This text, or the book of changes encourages people to accept change as being a good thing and also inevitable. It also talks about opposites being balanced and the process of events. The book is highly structured as it is a set of statements which are divided into 64 sets of six lines. Each of these six lines is called a hexagram.

The lines within each hexagram are described as either being yin or yang. Yang lines consist of solid lines while yin lines are broken. The divination ritual involves casting a hexagram and interpreting each separate line.

People in China may use this text for two separate purposes. One purpose is to use it for finding out about ancient cosmic principles, while its also used for the purpose of divination. Its widely used by a lot of Chinese fortune tellers but has also had huge influence over a lot of other people including philosophers and artists. This powerful text has changed many peoples perception of the world.

It has influenced many Westerners to change the way they think. When used as a divination tool it can interpret natural events so that their significance and cause might be known. Fortune-telling is certainly popular throughout the world but especially in the West.
