Roulette is an exciting spin-the-wheel type of game that is played in casinos and internet game sites. It was invented in the 17th century and has entertained millions of men and women since then. Roulette was named after the French diminutive for "little wheel." The roulette wheel itself has alternate red and black colors with numbered compartments or pockets. The standard number of pockets for the European roulette is 37 whereas the American roulette typically has 38. For the past decades, roulette games have been a favorite among regular and occasional casino goers. With the advent of the Internet, casino game enthusiasts can now play roulette online at any preferred time. The online roulette game experience is similar to going to a live casino, but with added advantages.

There are two kinds of roulette games: the single zero roulette and the double zero roulette. In either case, the player picks one or more numbers and waits for the ball to stop on a number pocket. The player makes a wager by selecting a certain value of chips and placing it on the chosen pocket. The player can bet on a sole number, several numbers, red or black, and odd or even number. The croupier spins the roulette wheel in one direction and then starts a ball rolling toward the opposite direction. The player waits for the ball to lose momentum and eventually stop in one of the 37 or 38 number pockets. The player wins if the ball rests on at least one of the chosen number pockets.

The winnings are paid based on the payout chart, which is typically displayed onscreen in most online roulette games. Payouts can also be determined from the type of bet made by the player. According to the number of slots chosen, the player can make several kinds of bets including straight-up bet, split bet, street bet, corner bet, column bet, or even bet. A straight-up bet on a single number has a 35:1 payout. A split bet on two numbers has 17:1 payout. A street bet on three numbers has 11:1 payout. A corner bet on four numbers has 8:1. Meanwhile, outside bets such as the column bet and even bet offers 2:1 and 1:1 payout, respectively.

For roulette games, rules and betting procedures can differ from one casino to another. Nonetheless, the En Prison rule and the La Partage rule are two universal rules that are implemented in virtually any casino. The En Prison rule allows the player to return half of the bet amount when the ball lands on zero. With the En Prison, the bet amount can be carried over to the next spin of the wheel. In the La Partage rule, the player loses only half of the total bet amount when the ball stops on zero. However, unlike the En Prison rule, the player is not allowed to use the bet amount for the next wheel spin. Online roulette game rules may also vary depending on the online casino.
