When given to patients who had already had a heart attack, it caused significant decreases in mortality compared to a placebo. It is hard to evaluate its safety because of a lack of testing. Prescription statin drugs are known to have several serious side effects. Since the amount of statin equivalent contents are variable, there is no reasonable basis for determining the likelihood of them occurring with the over the counter substance.

Sellers of red yeast rice must walk a fine line to protect themselves from FDA action, since the product has not had sufficient formal testing. They need to avoid any health claims in their advertising and product packaging. They generally avoid mentioning the presence of monacolin K. Of course, many consumers are aware of its possible healthy effects, based on other information they have encountered.

Most doctors agree that LDL levels should be controlled. Red yeast rice is one way of doing this. Unfortunately, the effectiveness and safety of this treatment are not well established. Anyone with concerns about high LDL should talk to their doctor before beginning any treatment.
