Adopting a pet is saving a life - this is something no one can discount. Why is it then, that there are still people who choose to take home a puppy from a pet store rather than go for pet adoption? The answer to this lies in the fact that there are a lot of misconceptions about the kinds of dogs one can find in animal shelters (no-kill shelters or otherwise) and animal rescue centers around the country. Some of these myths are discussed below.

Myth: Dogs turned over to shelters by their owners have behavioral problems.

Fact: Of course, one cannot say this with absolute certainty, but there are a lot of reasons owners give up their pet dogs, and most of these are not due to them experiencing problems with their dogs. Often, these animals are turned over to a shelter for any one of the following reasons: the owner (1) has died and no one can take the dog in; (2) is relocating to a place or community where pets are not allowed; (3) cannot handle the responsibilities attached to having a pet. It can also be the case that the dog was rescued from an abusive home.

Myth: You will always second-guess with a shelter dog.

Fact: Unless the dog was rescued or was left by its owners, it is not accurate to say that adopting a shelter dog is risky because you lack crucial information about it. Owners left with no choice but to give their dog to a shelter often also turn over what can be described as an "owner's manual" - documents and written accounts detailing the dog's medical history, his temperament, preferences, and the like. Also, most shelters examine the animals they take in so you can be sure that you will receive adequate information to be able to take care of your newly adopted pet properly.

Myth: Shelter dogs are in poor shape and are therefore difficult to care for.

Fact: In recent studies it has been found that most of the dogs in animal shelters across the country were surrendered by their owners (or by other people in the case of the owner's demise) due to circumstances beyond their control. As such, these dogs are not victims of abuse - these were loved and cared for by their owners, and are thus healthy. And although the same cannot be claimed for rescued animals, almost all animal shelters conduct a medical examination on the dogs they take in and address the health issues they find the best way possible. Apart from this, vaccines, as well as spay and neuter services, are given to dogs that are in need of them. These facts only further reinforce the reality that shelter dogs are healthy, cared for animals.

Myth: You won't find purebreds in shelters.

Fact: With the information given in the preceding points, one can easily dispel this particular claim as a myth. It is incorrect to claim that dogs in shelter homes are mutts, since it is highly likely that there are purebreds among the animals turned over by owners who can no longer be responsible for them.
