Analysis: Many Italians Fed Up With Berlusconi

Hundreds of thousands of people -- mostly women -- took to the streets of Rome and elsewhere in Italy on Sunday to demonstrate against Premier Silvio Berlusconi and his dalliances with young women.

The Italian media reported that protests took place in more than 200 cities and towns in Italy and even at a few Italian embassies overseas.

The protests were sparked by the 74-year-old Berlusconi's relationship with a Moroccan night club dancer named Karima el Mahrough -- best known by her stage name "Ruby."

Prosecutors on Wednesday filed paperwork to have Berlusconi tried for abuse of power and for paying for sex with Ruby, who was 17 when she met the premier.

Berlusconi, a billionaire media tycoon, has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, and both he and Ruby say they never had sex.

However, the denials have so far failed to gain traction, as pollsters say that Italians are not surprised by Berlusconi's behavior and that his desire to avoid prosecution has begun to distract him from his job as premier.

That sentiment was reflected in Sunday's protests, in which some women carried signs reading "Italy is not a brothel!" and "Italy needs a full time leader."

"This scandal has gone on long enough and it is time for Italy to start looking for another leader," Veronica Meo, a 52-year-old homemaker told La 7, the only national Italian television network neither directly or indirectly controlled by Berlusconi.

As Berlusconi has weathered many political storms in the past, it remains unclear whether the latest scandal will end up toppling his government. It is possible that this time can be different.

Judge Cristina di Censo was expected to decide Monday or Tuesday whether to allow the trial in the Ruby case to take place.

If she does, prosecutors appear to have constructed a case that will make a prosecution likely. And two other trials against Berlusconi for influencing peddling, tax evasion, and bribery are waiting in the wings.

Meanwhile, Berlusconi is suffering from falling approval rates, a series of embarrassing personal revelations pre-dating the Ruby affair, a sluggish economy, and the defection of key political allies.

Experts say Sunday's protest could knock in another nail in Berlusconi's political coffin.

Estimates for the number of protesters nationwide ranged from a low of half a million to a claim from organizers that the total has topped one million.

The massive amounts of media coverage -- even Berlusconi's Mediaset channels were forced to grant some coverage to the events -- would likely have a ripple effect that could further hurt the premier's already low popularity, experts said.

But pollsters also note that Berlusconi's strongest advantage still holds true: despite months of political problems, no strong opposition figure has yet to step up as a viable alternative to the premiere.
