Deciding on a contractor or installation team for a roofing project is an important decision that should not be made without first educating yourself on what to expect, industry standards, price, and the reputation of the provider.

Proven experience is perhaps the number one best indicator of a contractor's ability to do the job. When deciding on whom to hire, ask for references from former customers. These past clients can either vouch for the good work the contractor has done or they could talk your ear off about any problems that were directly caused by the contractor or his team. Word of mouth can be a powerful tool in checking out someone's reputation. Another good source of information about reputation is your local Better Business Bureau. They maintain records about complaints related to service provided by local businesses and these records include the nature of the complaint, attempts at resolution, and final resolution if there was one. They also give rankings to individual businesses based upon numbers and types of complaints filed by consumers.

The roofing contractor or installation team should be licensed and have adequate insurance coverage that will pay for things like any damage to your home that they are responsible for. Being licensed means that an accrediting agency (usually a state agency) has reviewed a person's education and/or training and grants them permission to perform work in a particular trade. Contractors can and do lose their licensing and there are many out there who never bother to get one at all. There are also situations in which it is necessary for the contractor to hire subcontractors. These subcontractors should also be licensed to perform their trade. Checking to ensure that proper licenses have been granted is a relatively easy process. Ask the roofer to see his license. On that document should be the name of the accrediting agency granting the license along with expiration or renewal dates. Once you have the name of the accrediting agency you can then follow up with them to check out whether or not that license had ever been suspended or revoked or if the contractor has been reprimanded by the agency in any way.

Most roofing contractors will offer an estimate that includes cost and time. Make sure to get this estimate in writing. The word estimate means a statement of approximations and it gives the roofing contractor a little flexibility to account for things outside of his control such as weather, unforeseen complications, and the actions of third party suppliers. A reputable contractor will work to stay within a reasonable time frame and forewarn you of any problems as soon as he knows about them.
