Running summer camps, especially when campers include older children and teenagers, can pose tough challenges. Having your own parenting experience is a definite advantage when it comes to recognizing a well run camp when you look over the camp information and when you tour one or more of them with your prospective camper in mind. In general, look for balance and for communication consistent with the home you have made for your child.

Look over the camp information from web site and fliers. Let the provided information guide your inquiries. Thorough, carefully and clearly presented information is an indicator that the camp might be just as thoughtfully run. Information typically includes the camp directory, general theme if there is one and descriptions of specific activities and accomodations for the campers.

Does the camp have a theme? A suitable theme can make a summer camp a lot more exciting and fun both for interested participants and the people putting it together. Knowing that theme will provide you and your child an idea of what to expect, and make for better readiness for the desired activities. A well run "theme camp" can be perfect for a child with a particular interest, as long as you determine it's the right fit.

Look for signs of the right balance between purely fun activities and those from which the participants stand to clearly learn valuable life lessons. Camp isn't school, and the achievements need not come from a highly pressurized competetive environment. There should also be sufficient down time and pacing that allow young people to appreciate the various activities and to find ample time to make new friends and socialize. A well run summer camp has structure with room for spontaneity and balance between action and pause.

When you look around the grounds and visit with the director, see if you can determine how well prepared the camp is for emergencies and unexpected injuries. If possible, ask to meet the camp nurse at her facility, and use the opportunity to bring up any special attention your child might require.

Make sure that the camp staff is trained and camper-oriented. It will be more fun for the kids if the camp staff are enthusiastic and more beneficial if the staff has been prepared for encouraging each camper's optimum experience. At a well run camp, participants will both enjoy activities and crafts with staff and find a mentor to guide them when they need one.

Look over the paperwork you will be asked to read and sign. Is the camp careful to secure all the necessary permissions? A well-run summer camp will never forego on the required paperwork. A camp may apprear to be strict when it comes to securing parental permissions and releases for each of the camp participants, but they are necessary for everyone's safety and protection. Care with legal requirements and parental awareness and agreement is a sign that a camp is well run.
