Types of Filters

Made of spun fibers shaped to form a mat, these filters are framed with cardboard in specific sizes. They are available at most hardware stores and should be replaced on a monthly basis.

Some manufacturers supply a filter with the purchase of a HVAC system. These filters are usually rubber-coated and washable. As air passes through, dust collects on its fibers which are bound together with a sticky surface. Cleaning is made simple with just a rinsing from the kitchen sink or a garden hose.

There is a higher quality mechanical filter that's now on the market. It's called a media filter and efficiency is not an issue. In fact, upon installation this filter removes about 75% more dust and it gets more efficient with continued use. By the end of its lifespan in the HVAC system, this type of filter approaches 99% of dust removal. However, it also becomes too restrictive for the proper amount of air flow. This could be very expensive or inexpensive depending on what you choose to do.

The media filter can be between one to five inches thick. Its surface is pleated to have as much area as possible to collect dust and pollen. The lifetime of the one-inch media filter is approximately a month, which is the same as the mechanical filters. However, the three to five-inch media filters can last from six months to a year.

Cleaning Filters

Full air flow is extremely important in a HVAC system. So clean filters are required for this machine to work at its maximum performance. Always make sure your filters are cleaned and replaced regularly.
