If there was a single word to describe van Gogh oil paintings, many would agree that deep is a good enough word. His paintings show vividly bright colors, swirly lines, deep and thick strokes and many distinctive characteristics that have often made these paintings worth another glance. Vincent Willem van Gogh is one of the few famous painters who are actually open to other people about his art and his beliefs. One of his first aspirations was to become a pastor and the closest he came to this was when he became a missionary on Belgium. In the last few years of his life, he was known to have suffered from a mental illness. But from what mental illness, nobody could be a 100% sure. The widely accepted theory is that he suffered from temporal lobe epilepsy, though bipolar disorder, hypergraphia, lead and thujone poisoning are still on the table as they could explain many symptoms shown throughout his life.

Vincent van Gogh oil paintings usually had similar themes. He loved painting portraits. His portrait of Dr. Paul Gachet and Postman Joseph Roulin are two of his most famous portraits. Dr. Paul Gachet was his physician in his later years. Postman Joseph Roulin was painted in a series of paintings together with his wife and three children. It has been hard for van Gogh to look for models in his career as an artist.

He also made quite a number self-portraits. In 3 years from 1886 to 1889, it is known that he has made 37 paintings of portraits of himself. One of his self-portrait showed him with a bandaged head after had cut off his right ear in one of his episodes. He drew and painted portraits, but when he painted portraits of himself, he rarely ever painted himself looking up front. He was always portrayed looking in anywhere but front.

Nature was next to his most favorite subjects. He painted irises, cypresses, olive trees, sunflowers, wheat fields and many more. Some of his most famous paintings included Vase with Twelve Sunflowers, which was one painting in a series; Red Vineyard, which was a picture depicting farmers of a vineyard; Wheatfield Under the Stars, which was one of his last paintings; Daubigny's Garden, which was a painting of then known painter, Charles-Francois Daubigny; and Irises, which he drew when he was in the asylum in Saint-Remy-de-Provence.

Vincent van Gogh oil paintings could be seen all throughout the world. His artworks attract thousands of people, and his life has color more vibrant than every other color that he had ever used. Combined, his life and his talent are undoubtedly the reasons why, up to now, his paintings live in the homes, museums and exhibits in different parts of the world for everyone to see and be awe.
