What is a Remote IP Address?

Why is it important to know your computer s remote IP address? The Internet Protocol (IP) address of a computer is its distinctive identifier number that will allow you to control it from another location, although they are usually translated into alphabetic characters to make them easier to remember. Before you can get the IP address, however, you will have to determine the computer s name. Follow these steps:
Click on the start button at the lower left corner of your desktop.
Click on "Run" in the Menu.

When the "Run" prompt box appears, type in "cmd" in the field (no quotation marks) and press Enter or click "OK".
A DOS command prompt window will appear. Type in "ipconfig /all"
The computer name will appear next to the host name.

Now that you know the name of the computer, you can find the remote IP address. Repeat the same process described above but at the DOS command prompt window type in ping, followed by the name of the computer, i.e. ping pc5. The IP address will display like this: Pinging pc5 with 32 bytes of data.

Now that you know the remote IP address you can use it to control your computer from another computer through a network connection, using Windows Remote Desktop. Follow these steps:
- On your local computer, click the Start button.
- When the menu appears, click on All Programs to expand the menu.
- Click on Accessories and then select Communications.
- From the Communications menu, choose Remote Desktop Connection.

When the pop-up window appears, type in the IP address in the Computer field, then click the Connect button.

Once the remote computer loads in the virtual environment, log in if required. Now you can control the remote computer.

Note that you will have to repeat this process periodically since many computers generally have a dynamic IP address. This means that every once in a while, your ISP changes the IP address so that it can be used by several users. The benefit of having a dynamic IP is that it is more secure than static IPs. But it can cause problems when you re remotely connected to another computer, since you may not be able to log on if the IP changes. You can avoid this problem by asking for a static IP address from your ISP. However, this may be more expensive and may compromise your privacy since websites keep records of IP addresses, which creates a log of surfing activity that may be accessed by data mining companies.

Another way to deal with the problem of dynamic IPs is to use applications that can either automatically update the IP address or retrieve the new IP from the router and send it to you by email so that you can connect to the remote computer. You can also set your router to assign a static remote IP address or configure it to use a limited range of IPs when assigning new addresses and then choose a static IP outside of this range to avoid possible conflicts.
