Jamaica vacations generally take place in Montego Bay and Ocho Rios on the north coast, South Coast and Kingston to the south, Negril on the island's west coast, and Port Antonio on the east coast. Each area has unique attributes; you may choose South Coast for a bit of adventure or opt for Port Antonio is you're more interested in tropical flora and fauna than anything else. Regardless of which area you stay in, Jamaica's old world charm is prevalent.

Montego Bay is closest to the international airport. Rooms at the Half Moon resort can be booked at an all-inclusive rate or room only. The expansive resort property covers 400 acres of land full of trees, gardens, wetlands, and two miles of beachfront property. There is no towering hotel tower at Half Moon; instead, rooms are in two story bungalows. With British styling, the Half Moon is an "old school" Jamaican getaway that combines island style and Jamaican hospitality with all the comforts of home.

In Ocho Rios, you can tube down the White River or climb up Dunn's River Falls. Reggae Beach is popular with the younger crowd. You must pay an entrance fee, but get a beachfront lounge chair, local music over a beachside sound system, and drink service. Several other beaches in the area offer similar service, many at a lower rate. Jamaica Inn is a favorite resort in Ocho Rios. Online reviewers rave about the resort's owner and general manager, who run the Jamaica Inn with old-world charm.

South Coast is visited less frequently than Montego Bay or Ocho Rios, but has a lot to offer those planning Jamaica vacations, particularly those looking for a bit of adventure. Y.S. Falls is considered one of the best waterfalls in Jamaica, and safaris on the Black River put you up close and personal with crocodiles and other Jamaican wildlife. The Appleton Rum Tours are also very popular and provide history and samples. Eat at Little Ochi for what locals consider the best lobster in the region; Jamaica vacations aren't complete without eating the local seafood at least once. Also on the south side of the island is Kingston, the capital of Jamaica and the country's commercial and cultural hub. The Bob Marley Museum is worth a look if you're traveling with a fan of reggae music. The relatively new Terra Nova Hotel is an all-suites hotel that caters to business and leisure travelers.

Negril, along Jamaica's west coast, is a small beach town that is home to both large all-inclusive resorts (mainly along the north of Negril's beach) and smaller, family-owned boutique accommodations (at the south end of the beach). Stop by Rick's Cafe, a scenic beach bar with a great view of the sunset, and watch locals (and some visitors) dive off the adjacent cliff into the ocean below. Some of the most luxurious accommodations in all of Jamaica can be found at Beaches Negril Resort and Spa. Known as one of the best luxury hotels in the world for families will small children, take advantage of the accredited nannies and water park with self serve ice cream. If children aren't a concern, or money is one, Tensing Pen is described as one of the few hotels that gracefully transitioned from hippie hideaway to modern boutique hotel. Yoga and seaside hammock massages await guests. Jamaica vacations at the Tensing Pen are said to prove that all-inclusive resorts are not necessarily the best way to go on the island.

Finally, Port Antonio on Jamaica's east coast is in the lushest, and rainiest, part of the island. Scenery is more rugged and waterfalls and rivers are nearly more popular than the beaches. Originally one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island, Port Antonio is now a relatively sleepy area with luxury resorts that cater to those looking for quieter getaways. Geejam is an art deco hotel with understated luxury. Step on the private beach and you'll never regret your decision to vacation in Port Antonio.
