The Causes Of High Triglycerides In Your Blood

Before we start, what are triglycerides? These are the fats or lipids that are found in your bloodstream. They are often used as a source of energy but are stored in our fat cells until they are called upon for energy. It's our hormones that will release these into our system in order to use them as energy.

If you have too high of levels you will be said to have hypertriglyceridemia. When this happens, the possibility of getting atherosclerosis or in other words, hardening of the arteries, can increase. This can then turn into a stroke, a heart attack or even heart disease.

When a person has too high of levels due to others in the family having the same problem, this is a hereditary issue. This is when the body seems to have a very hard time of metabolizing the lipids and getting them out of your bloodstream. This is however, a pretty rare conditions. Someone who has this problem really should stay away from eating all fats.

Another way that the levels can be increased could be due to improper diet or obesity. If you have a diet rich in fats and sugars you will more than likely have increased levels of fats and lipids in your body. Then add being obese, especially around the middle of your body and you are going to increase the probability even more. The levels will go up in those who drink too much alcohol as well.

For anyone with Type 2 Diabetes and don't control their disease with diet and medication are going to more than likely have an increase in their triglycerides. When this happens in a diabetic they could also end up suffering from neuropathy. This is a disorder where a person may lose the feeling in their extremities. They may also suffer from pain, numbness and tingling as well.

If there are liver or kidney issues an increase in your levels will appear. The liver helps to convert our fats and when working properly rids our blood of these fats that are in our blood. When the liver doesn't function the way it should, it simply won't be able to keep up with the production of the fats in the body. The same goes for the kidneys. If the kidneys can't get rid of the waste from our body through urination the levels are going to increase.

People who take certain medications for certain diseases or other issues my notice an increase of triglycerides. Some of the drugs that increase the levels are contraceptives taken orally, steroids, beta blockers for heart problems, hormones, Tamoxifen a cancer treatment and diuretics. Any of these drugs have been known to increase the levels in your blood.
