Your decision to take a particular major in college is your first step in the establishment of your career path. Is this true or false? The statement may actually be a matter of argument, but this article tends to support the "false" side or the position that the critical choice for a college major is not the first step in one's career path. Try asking high school students about their career path. They sure will not recoil in horror but expect signs that "career" is a scary word .

The baseless scare perhaps prompted most people to promote the idea that college is officially the starting line of a career path. A career path is the sequence of job roles which an individual holds over the span of a lifetime. However, a fully developed career path includes more than just work positions or roles but also education, training and other qualifications , experiences which will underpin the critical development of an individual in preparing for job roles outside the confines of the walls of the classroom, competencies, and affiliation with various organizations. Based on the definition of a fully developed career path, therefore, the most logical starting point of one's career path is the secondary level. In fact, many successful professionals in the industry intimated that their summer jobs directed them into their present careers.

High school introduces us to various paths early in life based on critical development experiences. Unconsciously, our critical path and our work interests are fired up in high school. For most people, however, college courses officially begin their career path on account of the much celebrated milestone of enrolling in college in preparation for their professional life. Based on a resource material for effectively planning an individual's professional life, there are at least a dozen clusters of college course majors in the American educational system, which are in turn, broken down to various college courses. The so-called 12 clusters of college majors include, in alphabetical order:
- agriculture/horticulture
- architecture, construction, and technology
- business,
- culinary arts, food service, and recreation
- engineering
- health care, medicine, and nursing
- languages and language arts
- life sciences
- performing and fine arts
- physical sciences and mathematics
- public service and government
- social sciences

From the 12 groups of major areas, there are more than 60 college courses for your choice. Seriously choosing which among the college courses are suited to your specific interests may not be an easy job. Nevertheless, you can rest assured there are people who can objectively help you make a fair selection as long as you can identify an area of interest and a list of subjects you are really good at or at least very much interested in. Your high school guidance counselor can offer you good advice. Your parents can also be excellent sources of advice to help you narrow down your choice of college courses to two or three.
