One of the most awful things about this condition, which is also known as onychomycosis, is the fact that it could strike you not once, not twice, but indefinitely many times in your lifetime. As long as you do not do anything to prevent it from happening, it will keep coming back and live inside your nails on your nail beds.

You might have already experienced how embarrassing it could be to have toenail fungus, but curing it does not ensure that you will never have it again. Because it is something that you can get from the environment as well as your lifestyle, it would be hard to say the risks of being reinfected if you have not changed either your environment or your lifestyle. Here are some ways on how you can prevent toenail fungus:

If you can avoid wearing shoes, do. Shoes provide three of the most needed things that fungi needs to live: darkness, warmth and moisture. Shoes could also make your feet sweat, and this makes your nail bed an ideal place to live in for fungi. Never wear shoes if your feet are even a tiny bit wet. Dry them off completely before you put your socks on. Never wear your shoes for two days running. Doing so would give your shoes the time it needs to actually dry, making it hard for fungi to live in.

Never wear shoes without wearing socks. Wearing antibacterial socks could also be a good idea. And of course, do not let your socks sit after you use them. Clean them as soon and as thoroughly as possible. Change your socks as often as needed.

If you have had onychomycosis and had it cured, it might be a good idea to buy a new pair of shoes. Some fungi could have hold on to the insides of your shoes, and it will be such a waste to get reinfected just after you've had the condition cured. Also, when curing onychomycosis, everything that has been used should be cleaned thoroughly. Patted your foot dry with a cloth? Wash it thoroughly. Used a nail cutter? Soak it in alcohol afterwards.

Using other people's things could also get you infected. Millions of people have toenail fungus, and someone you know might have it. Fungi could hold on to simple things like nail clippers. If you are using somebody else's things, make sure you clean them before and after you use them. Sharing towels isn't a very good idea too. Shared showers are some of the most popular places to pick up a fungus. Make sure you wear sandals or flip-flops when you're walking on these almost always wet floors.

Toenail fungus could be avoided easily, and all it takes is good hygiene. Millions of people suffer from fungi, but you don't need to be one of them and you definitely can avoid being one of them.
