Buying a new home heating and cooling system can be a daunting task. There are a multitude of options available to consider. A new heating and cooling system can be the most expensive replacement in a home. Depending on the size of the home, the presence of ductwork or pipe work and the ease of installation, the average prices for a new home heating and cooling system can cost anywhere from $1850.00 for a standard efficiency gas system to $18,500 for a geothermal heating and cooling system.

Another type of newer home heating and cooling system to consider might be a radiant heat system. In this type of system, hot water tubing is installed in the floors of the house and the heat warms the house from the floor to ceiling. These systems can be very expensive to install if the homeowner is moving from another type of delivery system. If problems occur in the system, repairs can be difficult and expensive as well.

Some houses have a hot water baseboard heating system. Houses with this type of system have been fitted with hot water pipes along the walls. The water is heated in the furnace and flows through the system, heating up the house. These systems are generally quiet and efficient, but must have a separate system for air conditioning installation.

A newer option is the use of geothermal systems. A new home heating and cooling system comprised of geothermal components is the most expensive option short-term, but can provide huge energy savings over the life of the system. Piping is run into the ground near the house to a depth low enough where a constant temperature is maintained and the coolant is then pumped back into the house for heating and cooling purposes.

These systems are clean, quiet and very efficient and can save up to 70 percent on heating and cooling costs during a year. Coupled with a passive solar energy system, these home heating and cooling systems can drop energy costs even lower.

In old houses, the homeowner might find a steam radiator system. The heat is sent to the radiators by way of steam pipes located in or on the walls of the room. This type of heating system is very efficient, but can be difficult to work around, as it requires the use of fixed radiators. Most radiators stand between two and three feet tall and are made of heavy iron. They can be difficult to clean around, and require steam 'bleeding' in order to maintain peak efficiency. In this type of set up, a cooling unit would need to be installed separately and would require the addition of new duct work, which would drive the cost up significantly.
