HVAC systems are also known as air conditioning and heating systems. HVAC is an acronym for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. A new HVAC system can be the most expensive replacement in a home. Depending on the size of the home, the presence of ductwork or pipe work and the ease of installation, the average prices for an HVAC system can cost anywhere from $1850.00 for a standard efficiency gas system to $18,500 for a geothermal heating and cooling system.

Many factors can go into deciding how to replace the system. Many houses have a forced-air system for both heating and cooling. The air is heated or cooled in a furnace and sent through the air ducts by a blower system that forces heated or cooled air out through the vents located throughout the house. A benefit to this is that both heating and air conditioning is done through one duct system. A drawback to this system is that it can be noisy-a fan is required to force the air through the system.

Some houses have an HVAC system that is comprised of two separate units. This can happen frequently with older houses. For these units, it can sometimes be worthwhile to combine systems into one central unit, but the costs of this kind of replacement will depend heavily on the amount of refitting needed.

It is less expensive to remain within the same type of HVAC system that is already in place. Having to install ductwork or pipes for a new system is extremely expensive and will impact all areas of the house. Simply replacing the heating and cooling unit will drive costs significantly lower.

If the HVAC system is over 20 years old, it will most likely need to be replaced. Newer and more efficient models will save money over the long term, improve the comfort of the home in winter months, and protect the occupants from illness associated with improperly working HVAC systems.

Many HVAC systems are forced air models. This means that heated air is run through ducts to the various rooms of the home. These systems can be run on either natural gas or electric. A major drawback to these systems is the amount of noise the blower makes while it is pushing the heated air.

Some houses have HVAC systems that use a hot water baseboard heating system. Houses with this type of system have been fitted with hot water pipes along the walls. The water is heated in the furnace and flows through the system, heating up the house. These systems are generally quiet and efficient, but must have a separate duct system for air conditioning installation.

Licensed, professional HVAC technicians are trained to install, maintain, and repair these systems and should be consulted for any major system problems.
