Public speaking is the act of delivering a speech to a group of people with the intention of informing the same, effect influence, persuade , entertain and the like. The degree of difficulty of public speaking relies partly relies on such purposes.

For example, if the purpose of a public speaker in delivering a speech is to inform, then all he has to do is get his facts straight, to make sure he delivers his speech with correctness and to make sure he delivers the same in a way that it will be understood as the goal is to inform and not to express. The main challenge in this kind of speech is one's ability to memorize.

Since speech is for information dissemination, the speech should be a hundred percent correct. It can not have any wrong or inaccurate detail because the speech may be rendered misleading. Thus, one's memory is of great value in this kind of speech. But of course, a speaker can always opt to just read his speech although such will not be as pleasing to the audience as when there is no cheat sheets in front of the speaker.

If the purpose of public speaking is to effect influence, the speaker must be able to establish credibility and authority. To be able to influence other people, the latter must believe that the speaker is not a liar and that he commands respect when he is speaking, and also, the listeners must believe in the authority of the speaker. The listeners must believe that the speaker has the right to speak on such topic and that he has moral ascendancy over the listeners for them to believe him and consider the thing that he wants to push to the people.

Establishing credibility and having authority is not something that a speaker can practice in one day. It is not something that can be prepared for or acquired in just one night. It is something that is formed and established years or even decades before the moment of public speaking. Influential speakers are leaders of an organization or a movement, presidents of a state, well-respected public figures, impartial journalists, experts in the field they are speaking about, seniors who have developed a good name for themselves over the years, and the like.

When speaking in front of the public to entertain, the speaker must make sure he is smart, witty and spontaneous. Maybe almost all kinds of speeches are the type where the speaker has to learn to express more than to impress. To impress is not the goal but it is a plus if the speaker is able to express the listeners. But it is not as important as expressing what one has to say. But, when speaking to entertain, more than to express, the speaker must be able to know how to impress listeners so that the goal to entertain would be achieved.
