Table tennis is for everyone. Just like many other sports as long as a person knows the basic rules and the goal of the game, table tennis (also referred to as ping pong) can be played.

The basic objective in ping pong is to be able to hit the ball so that it touches the part of the table that belongs to the opponent. Not being able to do this successfully would mean a point for one's opponent.

A ping pong table is a rectangular-shaped table that is divided in half. It is divided by a net a few inches high. Each half part belongs to the competitor standing on that side. An opponent can hit the ball and let it bounce on any part of the other player's side of the table. This rule is not the same during service on a game of doubles.

Doing a service is different from hitting the ball back to one's opponent. When serving, the ball has to hit one's side of the table first and it should bounce to the part of the table of the opponent's. The latter can hit the ball once it bounces from his side. If the server fails or neglects to make the ball hit his side first, the score goes to his opponent. And if the opponent fails to wait for the ball to bounce on his side, then the server gains a point.

Other ways to garner points in table tennis is when the player bumps the table while hitting the ball and when the ball did not reach the other side because it the net prevented it to. In both cases, the player receiving the ball or that is supposed to be receiving it gains a point.

Above are the basic principles that should be remembered when playing table tennis. This is applicable for both amateurs and experts or professionals. For the latter, there is a definitely different skills set requirement, though. But as for the rules, the same applies.

Being now familiar with the rules governing table tennis, the next step is to buy the equipment required to play this game properly. If one is buying for both players, then he needs two rackets, a ping pong ball and a spare would be wise (or better a whole box containing six or more, and a net. The table can also be bought. But some opt to have it made.
