The water tank is a dedicated container used for storing water and for various purposes. The need can be traced back to early civilized man and his agricultural, livestock and drinking water activities. The need for a water storage tank can also be seen in today's applications, like food preparation and chemical manufacturing

Various materials make up water storage tank: stone, concrete, plastics (made of polyethylene or polypropylene), and fiberglass, steel (carbon, bolted or welded and especially stainless). Some earthen pond formations seen anywhere may also function as a working water storage. The chemical contact tank feature coming from the FDA and the NSF polyethylene construction enables the retention time for various chemical treatment chemicals to treat product water chemically.

Ground water tank materials are made up of lined carbon steel, which receives water from designated sources (such as water well or surface water). This allows for large volumes of water for inventory purposes. This can also be accessed in peak demand cycles.

An elevated water tower tank is another design concept that creates significant pressure in outlets at ground level at 1 psi for every 2.31 feet elevation. This means that certain tanks with elevations up to 70 feet will create a 30-psi discharge pressure, not bad for a general-purpose setup. 30 psi is already known to be sufficient enough for most of man's industrial and domestic requirements.

The parameters that define such tank include the general design concepts and the construction materials used. Other factors include the following:

The location of the tank (if it is an indoor or outdoor tank, located above the ground or underground)
- The water volume that the tank will hold
- The purpose of the water in the tank
- The area temperature of the water storage (particularly with freezing concerns
- Various pressure requirements (with domestic pressures ranging from 35 to 60 psi)

Another effective design is the fire water tank, which is outlined as a horizontal truck used to deliver water in specific situations (remote fires with no available fire hydrants in nearby premises).

History showed us different materials used in making durable tanks: wood, stone and ceramic. These are easy to find and naturally occurring; some of the materials and designs still stands these days.

By design, a tank (or container in some cases) is not supposed to be harmful to the water stored in it. Water is known to be easily affected when in contact with ambient negative influences (bacteria, algae, viruses, accumulation of different minerals, PH changes and accumulated gas). A properly designed tank should address such negative effects.

Prevention is best achieved by periodically analyzing and treating water sources accordingly. In this special case, there should be a collected acid rain analysis and ph adjustments within the water tank before introducing water into domestic supply systems.
