Replacing the Belt on Your Electric Dryer

If you have a gas dryer a professional service person is probably the best choice. With electric dryers if you are at all handy it is not difficult to repair most problems you might have with them. If there is a problem with the motor this might be more complicated and require the help of a professional.If your dryer drum is not spinning when you turn it on this is most likely because the belt is either worn out or has slipped off. Sometimes you will hear a loud noise when your dryer is running and the drum stops spinning. This is a good indication that the belt just broke and you will have to put a new one on. Be sure to disconnect the cord of your electric dryer from the power supply before you do any work on it. Remove the screws which hold the top of the dry down and pull up on it to open the top of the dryer. If your dryer has the lint trap on top there will be two screws under the lint screen cover which will have to be removed before you can open the top. You will need to use a putty knife and slide it under the top of the dryer and pry it up to pop the clips holding the top on. Once you do this you will be able to see down inside the dryer. When you look inside you will see the outside of the drum. Wrapped around the drum should be a black rubber belt about three quarters of an inch wide. If there is no belt there or if you pull up on it and it is loose or comes out then you've found the answer to your problem.

After you have determined that the belt is in fact the problem you are dealing with, remove the front of the dryer by taking out the screws along the inside of the front of the dryer. You will have to use a piece of scrap wood or something to put under the drum to hold it up when you pull the front piece of the dryer forward.

Loop the belt around the drum keeping the grooved side of the belt down. Next you will need to push the pulley towards the motor, double up the belt and slide it under the idler pulley and around the motor pulley.

Now for the finish, pull the piece of scrap wood out from under the front of the drum, while holding the drum in place push the front of the dryer back into place. Make sure that the back of the drum is lined up with the seal at the rear of the bulkhead.

Close the top of the dryer and replace all of the screws and you're finished. Replacing the belt on your electric dryer was probably not as difficult as it may have seemed to you before you started.
