Tool Boxes are a Necessity in Any Garage.

When someone says the word tool box what is the image that comes to mind? I think of a small metal box with latches on the front and when you open it up there's a little removable tray and a space for larger things like hammers and such underneath. Because my grand-father and my father were both carpenters I automatically think of a carpenter's tool box. I had no idea just how many different types of tool boxes were out there are until I started looking for one.

There are mechanic's tool boxes which can be anything from a small toolbox you put in your trunk to the large cabinet tool boxes with drawers to organize every kind of tool you can think of, so large that they have to have wheels to move them around. They have tool boxes with work spaces and cabinets in them. These might be better named tool organizers.

Wood working tool boxes have come a long way from my grandfather's little hand-made wooden tool box with the round wooden handle all the way across the top. There are also huge wood working tool organizers for any size workshop or garage space. There are small tool organizers with a space for all the common tools you would use on a wood working project. This is handy if you have a large shop with a variety of tools organized in cabinets and you just need a few tools to take on the job.

Then there are truck tool boxes that fit behind the back window of a pickup truck. These tool boxes are not specific to any certain profession they can be used for anything that you need to carry in a tool box.

Another kind of tool box is the machinist's tool box. These have lots of smaller drawers and a felt lined top for the precision tools of a machinist.

I found metal tool boxes, wooden tool boxes, and plastic tool boxes. I even found people that will make a custom made tool box. There are people that will come in to your workshop and build custom tool boxes and tool organizers to help your shop function at the highest efficiency. I wonder if there's a tool box that will find my screw driver for me when I mindlessly set it down some place.

I am amazed at how far removed we are from my image of a tool box and especially the image of my grandfather's tool box. I know that my grandfather would be amazed at how far technology has come since 1972 when he died, but knowing how much he loved tool boxes and wood working tools, I think he would be even more amazed at how many choices there are out there. I think even with all the choices he would probably still stick with his little wooden tool box.
