There are water filters that are installed just by putting them on the end of the faucet and under the sink water filters. The whole house filter is just like it sounds for the whole house, it is installed either outside the house or at the point where the water enters the house and filters all water coming into the house. These filters are quite a bit more complicated to install and will have to be done by a professional.

Water pitcher filters, depending on the brand seem to work very well at filtering the water but have to be stored in the refrigerator taking up space and if you have more than one or two people in your home using water, it will have a difficult time keeping up with the demand for filtered water.

Faucet mounted water filters are a good choice for filtering drinking water and cooking water and are easy to install, just unscrew the aerator from the end of the faucet and screw the filter on in its place. The faucet filter can go back and forth from unfiltered to filtered water. The downside to these filters is that they slow the water flow and don't fit on all types of faucets.

Reverse Osmosis water filters are good for removing a large number of contaminants. They filter water by passing it through a semi-permeable membrane. The downside for them is that they produce about four gallons of waste water for every gallon of filtered water; they are slow and take up cabinet space. In order to maintain them properly they must be cleaned with bleach every so often.

Under the sink filters are usually installed under the kitchen sink and filter water which comes out through a separate fixture, a smaller faucet beside the main faucet. These are good at filtering lots of water but they do use space under the sink and like the whole house filter will most likely require a professional to install them. They are a less expensive choice than a whole house filter but can also be rather slow.

Many refrigerators have water filters built in to them. Refrigerators that have water dispensers on them do not necessarily have a filter built in. For these the water filter can be installed after market with water filters and water filter parts from a home improvement store. Maintenance on these water filters, require filter changes every so often.
