Basic chainsaw maintenance and chainsaw parts

Article Category: Advice

Author Name: Chris Kauffman

A well maintained chainsaw can last for many years. This is a fairly simple tool as far as parts but don't let that fool you maintenance is very important. A chainsaw has many uses from cutting down a huge tree to very delicate carving projects. I think everyone would agree that it would be terrible to be in the middle of cutting down a huge tree and have your chainsaw fail on you. This can happen with any chainsaw but the chances can be greatly reduced. We will start with the basic parts of the chainsaw and then go on to how to proper maintenance.

First and probably one of the most recognizable parts of this tool is the bar guide. This is the long flat piece that the chain wraps around. The bar has a guide on it that the chain sits in and spins.

The chain is just like it sounds, this has a sort of bicycle chain look to it. The difference is that it has many blades alternating right and left at intervals along the top. These are the cutter links. The chain is the main part of the saw and is the reason for the name.

The bar sits under a safety cover where it attaches to the motor unit and wraps around the sprocket at the end of the bar. The sprocket is round and wider than the bar. The chain has small protrusions which fit into a groove in the bar and catch on the sprocket which cause it to spin as the motor spins the sprocket. The clutch assembly sits on top of the sprocket and basically keeps the chain from spinning while the motor is idling.

There is an oil reservoir which holds oil to keep the bar lubricated. The oil for the motor is mixed with the gas. Be sure to look at the manual for your particular chainsaw to find the proper mixture of gas and two cycle engine oil.

The most important aspect of proper maintenance is to be sure that your saw has bar oil in the reservoir and that it is flowing properly to the chain. Your chain will either have an automatic oiling system or a pump oiling system. In either case the best way to check proper flow is to start your saw, hold it above a piece of white paper and pull the trigger to rev the motor. If the oil is flowing properly you will have a light spraying of oil on the paper. If the paper is dry then there is a problem. In this case there is probably dust and debris in the oil outlets. Look in your user manual to find out where these are and clean them. This will most likely take care of the problem. Keeping your chainsaw clean after each use will prevent this. Other basic care is keeping your chain sharp and replacing when necessary.
Taking these basic steps will give you many years with your chainsaw.
