See if you are able to repair the chainsaw or not. Sometimes a machine is too far gone and the cost outweighs the means. Buying one is the best option in most cases. If it is something as simple as a chain replacement, see if you can replace it instead of trying to repair it.

If you decide to repair or replace the old chain, the first thing you have to do is get rid of the old one. There will always be some kind of rivets or screws to take off and the master chain usually has to be removed from the blade area, otherwise known as the "bar". There are some models where you can pick a chain and just change it. These chains are sharp whether they have been used or not.

If repairing the chain is the route you are going to take, try sharpening it with a blade sharpener and any chains you cannot sharpen you can remove with a screwdriver or rivet punch. Replacing the damaged areas, or links, is very important at this stage.

Once you are done with the repairs, you can put the repaired chain back on the chainsaw or you can buy a brand new one. Always make sure that the links are matching up with the bar. You also want to make sure that the chainsaw's tension is right and is lubricated plus the chain is put in the right position.

Once all of these things are taken care of, you will want to make sure that all of your protective gear is on so that when you start up your equipment to see if your chainsaw is working again, you will not get hurt if something goes wrong.
