I don t know about you, but working with a weedwacker or a weedeater sounds like a lot

of fun. Although I know you re supposed to sweep the ground evenly with these tools, I m afraid I would be tempted to wave it around like a sword. But that would definitely be in contradiction to the safety manual so I guess I ll use the weedwacker or weedeater just as it was intended.

Seriously, although they are a relative newcomer to the yard care department, weed wackers (which are also known as weedeaters) are extremely useful tools. They have a cord which rotates rapidly, and due to the extremely high velocity, cuts down overgrown grass and weeds efficiently. Most weed wackers are powered with electricity, and the gardener should be careful not to cut through the power cord. Other weedeaters are powered by gasoline, and have a blade that decapitates the weeds and grass instead of a cord.

One of many advantages of weed wackers is its long reach. The cutting mechanism is at the end of a pole, generally 3-4 feet tall. So the gardener does not have to bend down to use it. In that way, the weedeater replace the little trimmers often used to trim grass by hand. It can also reach areas inaccessible to your lawn mower, and cuts grass that is too high for a lawn mower.

There are various pros and cons to both the gas powered weedeater and the weed wacker that cuts with the rotating cord. If your electric-powered weedeater was poorly made, you ll have to stop fairly frequently because the cord has whirled itself off the mechanism that held it in place. You will also need a fairly long extension cord to reach the further edge of your property.

If you have several acres of land to care for, a gas powered weedeater might be a better choice. It is loud and produces fumes, but it is much more portable than the electric weed wacker. You might also consider getting a weed wacker that is more expensive, because a more powerful weedeater will probably handle big jobs with ease.

All kidding aside, do use care when operating lawn and gardening equipment. The use of safety goggles is always recommended. Other safety precautions also suggest checking the ground for rocks or other obstructions, since they can cause the cutting cord to break. If your arms get tired, stop and rest so you do not injure yourself.

The weedeater is not meant to be a lawnmower; you will almost always need to use a lawnmower to make your lawn smooth and attractive. But weedeaters and weedwackers do a great job when used for unruly, overgrown grass and weeds.
