If you have an ice make installed in your freezer then you may have heard it drop ice every now and again. You may have also had problems with it getting clogged or even worse. If you have the commercial ice maker machines that are more complex, then you may have experienced more complex problems like overheating, condensation issues or worse. Ice makers have been around for years and they have made our lives much better by making our beverages colder and some of us would not know how to live without them. Most of us take it for granted so losing the use of an ice maker, if even for a day, could be devastating. With that in mind, trying to repair a broken ice maker yourself could be a rewarding feat but it could also be a very tough accomplishment to handle especially if you are not sure of what you are doing. You should always be aware of the task at hand by having the owner's manual ready or being up to date on all technical issues concerning repairing the ice maker. Never take on a job you cannot handle because you can end up costing yourself more money in the end than it is worth not to mention extra time and energy.

Below are some tips on how to repair an ice maker if you are thinking of taking on the job yourself but just remember that asking a technician for pointers is not a bad thing. Knowledge can save you time and money and is always helpful in the long run.

The first thing you have to think of is that maybe the ice maker is not cold enough to make the ice. A freezer has to be around 0 degrees so that ice maker can work right. If that is not the issue go to the next step.

The next thing would be to unplug the entire fridge and take over the cover of the ice maker. You might have to pry it off or unscrew it and then take out all the shelves, partitions or bins inside the ice maker.

Remove any other screws present so that you can remove the wires from the ice maker connector which attaches to the harness socket and then take out the ice maker.

If you have to service the inlet valve for the water, make sure you turn off the water first. Then take the valve off from the back of the fridge and take the tubes off and drain the water into a cup. Make sure you unplug the valve wires next.

Using a regular voltage meter set on RX10, make sure you test the terminals and see if they are good. If it reads anything less than 1,000 then that means they are good.

If all of this checks out, then chances are that the entire motor is bad and will need to be replaced or possibly could be the thermostat.
