However, as with regular hand tools, there are safety guidelines that every person should follow when working with electricity and building materials. Before you get started on your next project, make sure you know everything you need to about power tool safety.

1. Wear the appropriate safety equipment.

Most building jobs require safety glasses and perhaps even protective gloves, but power tools introduce even more potential for mishaps. When working with electrical appliances and tools, make sure you also have ear protection and shoes with rubber soles.

2. Be vigilant with the power button.

It is easy to forget that you are working with power tools and accidentally turn them off and on. This could result in serious injuries and even a loss of life, so make sure that you only plug in the tools that you know you will need, when you need them. Avoid turning your head away from power tools with the button switched on, and never leave plugged-in power tools lying around.

3. Have a clear plan of action before plugging in your power tool.

This is important both when you are working alone and when you are working with other people. Make sure you know exactly which materials or equipment you will need to cut, drill or saw before you turn on your power tool. If there are others working in close proximity, make sure they know exactly what you plan to do, too.

4. Decide who will be the project leader.

If you are working with one of more people, the person leading the project should always be the one to use the power tool. The noise created by most electrical tools prevents effective communication while they are in use, so it is a bad idea to try to give someone instructions on how to use a tool while it is on.

5. Watch your hands.

It may be seem like an obvious precaution, but make sure you take extra care to leave ample space between your hands and the tools. If you need to make adjustments, turn the power tool off before doing so.

6. Be Aware of Electrical Cords

Try to leave a clear walking path around your work area, and always be aware of power tool cords. When you are done using your power tools, take the time to wrap the cords and put them away properly.

7. Study the cords and plugs.

Many power tools come with plugs that are grounded or polarized. It is never a good idea to try to alter a cord to make it fit into a socket.
