One of the most used electric appliances in the home is the refrigerator. People use it every single day, to store fresh eggs and meat, to keep sodas cool and to make ice. One cannot comfortably live in a home without a fully functioning refrigerator. That is why you need to take care of this particular appliance. It is not a secret that electric appliances that are constantly cleaned last longer than those that are not. So in order for you to get the most out of the fridge you bought, you need to be able to clean it properly. Here is a guide on how to clean a refrigerator.

Read the refrigerator manual. This should give you all the do's and don'ts that you need to follow for your particular model. Have it near you as you go through the next steps.

Remove all the food in your refrigerator. Ideally, you clean your fridge before you do your next food shopping so you have lesser food items to remove from your fridge. This will also allow you to toss out any old food items that have been rotting in your fridge for some time now. As for the food that will still be returned in your fridge, put them in an ice cooler. This will be your alternate storage while you are cleaning the fridge.

Remove movable drawers, containers and shelves. This is where the manual will come in handy as it will give you proper instructions in detaching these removable pieces in your fridge. Set these pieces aside.

Go back to the fridge and wipe the entire interior with a clean rag dipped in warm water and mild soap. Do this from top to bottom. For tougher stains, do not be tempted to use a scouring pad as that will ruin the surface of your fridge. Use a soft bristled toothbrush or leave a warm wet cloth on top of the caked stain to make in softer.

Go back to the removable plastic pieces, set these aside so you can wash them separately in your sink with warm water and soap. For removable ceramic pieces, you need to let them reach room temperature first before washing them with warm water and soap. This is done to prevent cracking.

If your freezer is not anti-frost, then you need to open it and let the ice thaw and fall off from the compartments. When the ice melts and the water goes to the drip pan, usually located at the back of the fridge, pull it out, clean and drain it. Clean the freezer.

Dry the fridge once you are done cleaning it. Use a dry clean piece of cloth or a soft terry towel. Do not forget to dry the doors too.

The refrigerator is one of the most important electric appliances in the home. Make sure you take care of it by following this cleaning guide and having it maintenance checked every year or two.
