Tips in Repairing a Chess Set

A chess set can either be cheap or expensive. The cheap one can be bought from a dollar store while the expensive one can cost up to half a million dollars. But whatever the quality the set is made from, there are times when a piece may get broken therefore you will need to repair it. The pieces that are tiny can be fixed with glue. If the piece gets broken in half or if the cross on top of the king piece falls off, there are ways to put them back.

Evaluate closely the breaking point of the piece. See what the material is made of whether it is plastic, wood or metal. Get the appropriate glue for the material. On the main body of the piece, place a tiny amount of the glue. Immediately place the broken part onto the gap. This can be done if the break is not that severe. If it is, the pin process must be used.

Using a pin, drill a 5-mm hole in the bigger portion of the two pieces. Get a paper clip and straighten it out. Place the glue to the tip of the clip and place this into the hole you made. Take away the excess part of the clip but leave around 5 to 10 millimeters jutting from the hole. Get a tiny amount of paint and dab it on the excess paper clip. Get the other broken piece and try to connect it to the other part properly. Once it touches the pin, a mark will be placed on its bottom because of the paint therefore you will know where you should drill a hole.

Get the second part of the chess set piece and into the paint mark, drill a hole with an angle of 90 degrees. Get a paper clip and see if it fits in the second piece. Apply glue on the drilled piece and if it fits, insert a pin into it. Make sure that the fit is right, secure and snug. Dig deeper and then place glue again if the hole is shallow. When this produces a snug fit, place glue onto the drilled piece and put a pin into the hole of the chess piece that got broken. Allow the piece to dry for a few hours before using it.

If the felt or cork of the chess set piece is broken, here is what you should do. Take off the broken cork or felt from underneath the chess piece and apply adhesive remover on its base to take off the glue. Use a towel and water to wipe the bottom afterwards. Get a new felt or cork and place the piece on it. Use a pencil to trace the bottom of the piece. Using a pair of scissors, cut the encircled portion of the felt. As for the cork, use a band saw to cut off the encircled part and then smooth the edges using a sander. Place glue on the cork or felt's circumference and place this on a hollow piece. You can also apply glue on the entire cork or felt if the piece is full bodied. Place the cork or felt properly on the base of the piece and allow drying.
